This season, something sweet and soulful is coming to Serenity Island Retreats in Pine island Florida and it’s not just dessert. It’s ceremonial cacao: an ancient, heart-opening ritual that turns pure chocolate into a spiritual experience.

Our resident shaman, Christar, has been slowly inviting us into her world of beautiful, grounding healing practices, and we’re thrilled to add sacred cacao ceremonies to our retreat lineup. When she first mentioned it, I’ll admit — I thought she meant coca! But this is something entirely different — a rich, unprocessed, pure form of chocolate in its most natural, ceremonial state, shared with intention and reverence around our fire under the stars.

🍫 What Exactly

Is a Cacao Ceremony?

A cacao ceremony is not about indulgence — it’s about connection.

Rooted in the traditions of the Maya and Aztec civilizations, cacao (Theobroma cacao, literally “food of the gods” in Greek) was used for thousands of years in rituals honoring life, love, and spirit.

In a modern ceremony, participants gather in a sacred circle to drink a warm cup of pure, unsweetened cacao — gently blended with water and spices — and move through meditation, reflection, or simple silence. The goal isn’t to “do” anything, but to open the heart, quiet the mind, and reconnect to what truly matters.

❤️ Why It’s Called “Heart Medicine”

Cacao is naturally rich in magnesium, iron, antioxidants, and theobromine, a gentle cardiovascular stimulant that enhances circulation and uplifts energy — without the jittery edge of caffeine. But beyond nutrition, its magic lies in how it makes you feel.

Within minutes, many people experience a sense of warmth, openness, and joy. Ancient cultures believed cacao could “soften the armor around the heart,” and modern participants often describe feelings of love, peace, and clarity.

Scientifically, this makes sense — cacao supports the release of serotonin, dopamine, and anandamide (“the bliss molecule”), which together elevate mood and ease emotional tension. It’s no wonder it’s known as the “heart-opening” plant.

🔥 Ceremony by the Fire

At Serenity Island, our cacao ceremonies are held under the night sky, gathered in circle by the fire. Christar begins by sharing the story of cacao — its ancient lineage and the intention behind each cup. As the cacao is poured, participants are invited to set an intention: something to release, to call in, or simply to honor within themselves.

Then comes stillness — a guided meditation, soft music, perhaps gentle movement or shared reflection. The experience is personal and collective at once — a blend of warmth, laughter, and calm presence.

🌿 Why We Love It

In a world that’s often loud and rushed, cacao invites us back to simplicity — to the senses, to the heart, to gratitude. It’s a sweet medicine for the soul, connecting us to each other and to nature in a deeply grounding way.

At Serenity Island Retreats, we believe in experiences that nurture both joy and depth — the playful and the profound. Adding cacao ceremonies to our seasonal offerings is our way of honoring ancient wisdom while creating something accessible, delicious, and truly heart-healing.
